You are absolutely right. We are concerned about creating a psychological dependence on meds. What some Doctors do to overcome this is to give these meds on a scheduled dose rather than a on-demand dose. In my personal experience, most of my patients actually are able to stop using the meds and do not develop a dependence.
Of course if the patient can recover without meds that will be ideal. I have tried referring some patients to a therapist/counsellor but many times the counsellor advises the patient to come back to see me for meds.
It is a challenging issue and I certainly admit western medicine does not have ideal solutions.
