I've explained this many times.

In the early days I was footing the hosting bill with zero adverts.

However as traffic built up the hosting went from tens of dollars to hundreds of dollars and then thousands of dollars per month.

There was no way I could have carried on without adverts.

With adverts come obligations and one of them is to keep spam out.

However the spammers are not stupid so they disguise their ads as FRs or recommendations.

The advertisers then start complaining about why they have to pay when some other nick is advertising for free.

Without commercialising the forum would have closed shop 15 years ago.

As for Delphi that platform was absolutely free so it was therefore a free for all too. However the problem with Delphi is I had to abide by their terms and conditions and it was a messy arrangement. That is why I moved to my own server and vbulletin.
