Chapter 5

Yvette had been three weeks into her admin assistant job at the firm, and everything she experienced there, she’d always accepted it as things that normally happened in the corporate world, and she was eager and optimistic. Interacting and being around seemingly driven, work hard, play hard corporate types daily, the 23 year young Yvette was motivated and inspired.

The relatively expensive lunches at classy bistros, the after work soirees at chic, upscale restaurants and nightspots, seeing even the sales managers not much older and some even younger than her spending money freely on expensive meals and booze, driving expensive luxury cars and owning watches that cost her annual income slowly but surely reshaped Yvette’s outlook. She felt she was in this exciting new world now, and though her monthly pay ranged around the mid-2k per month level, the possibilities seemed endless. and the people were a higher level sort of different. They behaved differently, spoke differently and spent differently. While Yvette had saved for months to purchase her Kate Spade handbag, and the most expensive gift she received from her boyfriend had been a Coach wallet, here the people talked Cartier, Chanel and Hermes. While the palpable affluence of the people in office had been one thing, their style and apparent life experience had been another. Most of these sales executives talked about their vacations to beaches in the Bahamas, partying in Rio or Ibiza, drives along the south of France and living it up in Monaco and the like.

Even Yvette’s fellow female admin assistants on the same pay grade always looked well put together, their make up always impeccably done and their outfits looked classy and well coordinated even on casual Fridays. They themselves did not seem short of high end accessories; the bags these girls carried were the likes of Chanel and Vuitton, and more than a few of them wore expensive accessories. Yvette was by nature an introvert, and though there were the very occasional lunch appointments she had with her fellow admin assistants when their schedules matched she did not really talk that much with them; and besides, she still had her hands very full trying to get used to her responsibilities as well as the fast paced work environment. On some days she noticed one or two of them change into slinky expensive looking evening wear and heels near the end of the workday and rush off to what seemed like exclusive events; the amount of dolling up had definitely been too much for just an after work date. One particular evening in the elevator she’d run into a girl who was working as a trader assistant for the manager handling commodities had swapped out her silk OL blouse and pencil skirt for a figure hugging strapless dress with a high tulip hemline which seemed dangerously short, along with sheer black stockings and 4 inch stilettos, and her makeup redone with darker eyeshadow for an evening look. Her freshly applied Chloe fragrance filled the elevator. They’d smiled and made small talk. Yvette had asked if she was on her way to some particularly special event; the girl only mentioned she would be accompanying her boss to host an important client to dinner at an upscale Michelin star restaurant. As they exited the office building together Yvette saw the girl’s manager already waiting at the pick up point in his BMW roadster. The girl sure looked very different after being dolled up, was the fleeting thought that crossed Yvette’s mind as she made her way to the MRT station, looking forward to getting home and catching up on a Korean drama series.

The next day at work Yvette found herself having lunch alone - she'd agreed to have lunch with the dolled up girl she had met in the elevator the day before but that girl was absent from work. Perhaps she had been too exhausted from her very long day and evening yesterday, was all Yvette thought while standing in line at the foodcourt to order her lunch, and made a mental note to catch up with the girl another day.

Chapter 6

Five weeks into Yvette’s time at the firm

Friday 5:46 pm

It was fast approaching 6pm on Friday evening but Yvette was still nowhere halfway through compiling a stack of business expense reports for her manager and his team. The office was beginning to empty out, as everyone was eager to start their weekend. As the deadline for submission of those reports was closing in Yvette was stuck in the office until she finished them. She picked up her cellphone and texted her boyfriend to let him know she probably wouldn’t be able to make it to their after work dinner appointment that evening.

“Baby, I see you tmr k… today I’ll have to OT until night time” Yvette texted, along with a crying face emoticon.

“Ok dear, dont work too hard k. Looking forward to tomorrow!” came the reply from a disappointed Jason. He had had a long week in camp and was really looking forward to spending time with his pretty girlfriend after booking out that day. Yvette was already focused on her spreadsheet by then, and only saw the message via a glance at her phone’s notification screen before swiping the banner away to dismiss it without even opening the app. The ticks on Jason’s message remained grey, indicating to the sender that the message had not been read.

Friday 7:51 pm

Yvette had been working for 2 straight hours and she estimated she was about sixty to sixty five percent done.

She feels her throat getting dry and decides to make a quick trip to the pantry for some water. Her phone rings. It is her manager, inviting her to join an ongoing after hours party at a nearby upscale rooftop bar nearby with some other sales and trading managers in the office. He says he will help extend the submission deadline by a bit. The relief at getting approval to leave work as well as a deadline extension, combined even with free drinks at a place above her pay grade on top of everything was certainly enticing to Yvette, and she packs her desk and briefly stops by the ladies’ room to reapply her make-up before summarily leaving the office.

The party was just beginning to pick up by the time a lost looking Yvette stepped into the venue, as her manager spots her and calls her over to their table, where at least 4 or 5 other male managers were enjoying drinks with two young and attractive girls. Yvette recognized only one of the girls as the admin assistant for the futures team and the other was introduced to Yvette as the sales assistant for the commodities team.

The men were flirting freely with the girls, and there was a lot of physical contact. The girls did not seem to mind, even the admin assistant for futures whom, Yvette recalled, seemed to be in a serious relationship had just applied to purchase an apartment with her boyfriend and register their marriage, had a manager's hands all over her as she and the other girls there responded favorably to the mens’ advances and more or less allowed the men physical contact while they enjoyed their drinks and chatted on the sofa.

Three glasses of champagne and two tequila shots later and Yvette is very high. Inebriated, she loosened up to the point that she was almost at the opposite end of the spectrum from her usual introverted self. and begins to vibe with the group, and with a lot of peer pressure and encouragement from the managers in their after work party mode and backed up by the other girls telling her "It's all good, girl/we all are just having fun/work hard then must play hard also/let loose a bit", Yvette's guard falls as she responds positively to the men’s teasing and flirting. The lively mood and the feeling of being part of this exclusive group made Yvette uninhibited. One of the more senior guys in the group called for them to move the party to a suite on the upper floors of that same hotel which the men had booked for the occasion and the very intoxicated Yvette willingly went with the group, stumbling a little on her high heels as her manager escorted her by the waist…
