Malaysian budget carrier Malindo Air catches fire at 2,000m above ground

PETALING JAYA (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - An airplane departing Kuala Lumpur for Kuala Terengganu in a domestic flight on Wednesday morning was forced to turn back to the Subang Airport after a fire broke out on the plane.

In a press statement, low-cost carrier Malindo Air said the ATR-72-600 twin-engine turboprop aircraft experienced the incident during ascent, at about 2,130m.

"The aircraft fire detection system was activated and immediately, the operating crew carried out the emergency checklist as per the standard operating procedure to contain the situation," said the statement.

"The captain decided to turn back to Subang and the aircraft landed safely in Subang without any further incident and no one was hurt."
