SINGAPORE - Two brothers were charged in court on Thursday with passing on information to two people of a surprise check by National Environment Agency (NEA) officers, in breach of the Official Secrets Act.

Muhammad Alhaffif Mohamad Saifuddin, 28, was attached to the hygiene department of the NEA's Central Regional Office when he allegedly tipped off Mr Muhammad Ramadan Mohamad Saifuddin about the inspection in the Arab Street and Bali Road area on Feb 8, 2012.

His 25-year-old brother, Muhammad Ramadan, is accused of sharing the same information with Mr Ameen Ali Salim, the owner of a cafe in Arab Street, that day.

Both men are represented by Mr C.S. Lee.

If convicted, they could each be fined up to $2,000 and jailed for up to two years. Their police bail of $5,000 each was extended.

A pre-trial conference has been set for April 11.
